Based on the two stories in Chinese Mythology, the students of Zhiren Theatre Group in Tianfu No.7 High School created two theatrical performances "Jingwei Filling Up the Sea" and "The Nine-colored Deer" with their drama teachers Miao Bin and Eley Yuan who are members of IDEA(International Drama Education Association). Miao Bin is also a PhD candidate in the Department of Theatre Studies, University of Peloponnese in Greece. These two productions were generated in their drama classes every week. Tianfu No.7 High School is one of the few schools in Chengdu, China which has officially listed drama courses as a compulsory discipline. The children are 6 and 7 years old and have had experience with drama classes for almost one year.
Highlights in the Theatrical Performances of "Jingwei Filling Up the Sea" and "Nine-colored Deer"
"Jingwei Filling Up the Sea" tells about the daughter of Yan Emperor Nüwa went alone to the East Sea to watch the sunrise and drown into the sea. Her soul became a bird which was calling "jingwei jingwei". After she drowned when watching the sun rise in the Eastern Sea, she metamorphosed into a bird called Jingwei. Jingwei is determined to fill up the sea, so she continuously carries a pebble or twig in her mouth and drops it into the Eastern Sea. In this play, this ancient story was connected with the absence of accompaniment of parents with their children because of busy work in the modern society, and wish to inspire the parents to rethink about the importance of companionship in parent-child relationship.
"The Nine-colored Deer" tells about that the Nine-colored deer saved a medicine picker named Diao Da who fell into the river, and it did not want any repayment but only ask him not to tell anyone about it. However, when the queen asked the king to hunt for a nine-colored deer to make leather clothes and the king gave the order to find the deer with high treasure reward, Diao Da broke his promises. When the King found the deer, the deer told him about the story. The King decided to punish Diao Da but let the deer leave. This play is willing to inspire children on the value of integrity.
